Sea Buckthorn

A thorny coastal bush with narrow leaves and orange berries from late summer. It thrives in gravel and sand, and tolerates coast and wind. The intense, tart berries with flavours of passion fruit, orange, mango and pineapple have taken a prominent place in modern gastronomy in ice cream, juice, puree and cake. I love it as a side flavour, but I think it should be kept restrained. A trick is to pick it a little early, as it gets a slightly bilious taste when fully ripe.
